What to do... what to do? 10 years old and no idea that your new hobby can turn into your job. Do you think it can happen? Well sure it can! It happened to my mom and I think her hobby turned out to be the best job on the planet.
Good morning teachers and students. Today I will be talking to you about some of the reasons my mom has the best job ever. One of those reasons is her workplace. The University of Toronto is such an interesting place to have a job. It was founded in 1827, making it one of the oldest Universities in Canada. U of T is the biggest research institution in the country. Many important discoveries have been made by people that were there in the 18 and 1900's. Not only is there technology from the past but a lot of recent developments like the four story high weather balloon and the giant telescope. The gigantic balloon is stored right next door to my Mom when it’s not in the sky, how cool is that? In the Astronomy Department the giant telescope stands at an enormous height. I’ve looked through it.
Since U of T is one of the oldest Universities in Canada it has many historical buildings such as the University College. However the UC they have now is not the original. The first one built was destroyed by a fire. The old custodian was polishing the bell when he dropped his lantern and flames spread throughout most of the building. Rumour has it that his spirit still haunts the tower where he was burned to death. My mom told me that story. She also mentioned many important people that were there in the past. There was Frederick Banting and Charles Best who developed insulin in 1921. This made diabetes a treatable disease. They received the Nobel prize in 1923.
John Polyani did work with infrared chemiluminescence … well I think I said that right but I have no idea what it means. It must be important because it won him a Nobel prize in 1986. Baby food, flight suits, lung transplants, radar, these are just some of the other things invented and first tried by people who have been a part of the U of T.
You’re probably thinking by now "wasn't she going to talk about her mom having the best job?" Well... she takes pictures of rocks... and other things. OK, it doesn't sound as interesting now but once you hear more about what she does, you will be surprised. For instance, some of those rocks come from outer space and the bottom of the ocean. She took pictures of Frederick Banting Nobel prize and Marc Garneau, the very first Canadian Astronaut. She's taken a lot of other photographs of things like a mummified cat, 500 year old books and really cool machines. She's not only a photographer though, she's also a graphic artist. In that part of her job she's usually making newsletters and web pages for her department. Sometimes she receives big projects like making scientific diagrams and maps for textbooks and lectures. Pretty cool huh?
What are your hobbies? I like playing soccer and writing stories. Maybe the same thing that happened to my mom’s little photography hobby will happen to me. I might become a professional soccer player or a best selling author. I never know what's around the corner, but now I'm just a 10 year old girl with a hobby, just like my mom once was.
