What are you going to be when you grow up? How am I supposed to know what I want to be right now? When most children answer this question they say obvious jobs like doctor, hockey player, fashion designer, and things like that. I don’t think I’ve heard one child say that they want to be a citrus fruit colourer when they grow up. And why not? Because we’re limiting answers to the usual jobs and not looking into the world to find the job that is right for us. Think about it, there are thousands, maybe millions of jobs we have no idea about. Here are a few:
• The jelly doughnut filler, yes that’s right you could be a jelly doughnut filler when you grow up. Simple, easy, and yummy.
• The furniture tester, are you familiar with the La-Z-boy company? Well, they have people to test their furniture to make sure it’s “comfortable”.
• The citrus fruit colourer, in this job you will be able to colour citrus fruit such as lemons, oranges and limes because most (citrus) fruits are picked before they are ready.
• The note taker for college students, this job lets you do exactly what it is called.
• The scuba guide, they lead and supervise scuba divers/dives. (To have this job you usually have to live in hot climates.)
• The professional hacker, this job is perfect for people who are great with computers, and let me tell you, that this worker does not get paid cheap.
• The photographer for items in catalogue booklets, how many times have you seen items like clothes and toys in magazines? Well, you could be taking those pictures.
As you can see there are a lot of wacky jobs we had no idea about. A lot of jobs are no longer available to us because of technology too. Like the milkman for example, when have you seen one of those around? The bakery is also an example. When have you ever actually bought bread freshly made and/or not at the grocery store? I know the bakery is a place, not a job, but you could still work there as a baker, if they were still around (a lot).
Nonetheless, technology has provided many new jobs for us to explore. It’s changing the world so much, that by the time we start looking for a job there will be a lot of different and cool jobs for us to explore.
However, there are a few cutting edge jobs right now, and here are some of them:
• The radiation therapist, this worker gives out treatment that a doctor prescribed and supervised.
• The art therapist, I know it sounds strange but these people help physical, mental and emotional disabilities through art.
• The animal defense lawyer, they take care of cases where the pets’ owners get a divorce and things like that.
• The computer forensic expert, they use computer investigation to find legal or illegal evidence.
There are also jobs that are great for certain people with certain characteristics. Like someone who is fascinated with animals or loves them might want to become a veterinarian. Or someone who has /someone close to them has a certain illness they can’t get rid of might want to find a cure for that illness when they get older.
Something might happen in your life that could change your mind too. One day you might want to be an astronaut, the next day you fall, chip your tooth, get interested in how they fix it, next thing you know you want to be a dentist when you grow up. But wait, it doesn’t stop there, you could be an orthodontist when you grow up – a higher form of dentist.
A lot of jobs have promotions or a better paying job that does basically the same thing. These are the type of jobs that we should look for, not the ones that are right there out in the open, but the jobs that you need to “discover”. Like the commercial, your job is out there and with a little digging and looking, you’ll find it. Some people limit themselves to what they’ve going to be, based on what they’ve good at when they’re a child. Don’t let that person be you.
