White, yellow, green, blue, red and black, these are not just colors; they are levels of belts in Tae Kwon Do.
Hello, teachers and classmates, my name is Geoffrey K. and today I will tell you about my favorite sport, Tae Kwon Do.
Tao Kwon Do is a form of Martial arts designed for self defense. The meaning of Tae Kwon Do is Korean and the word Tae means jumping and flying, to kick or smash with the foot. Kwon denotes the fist, to punch or destroy with the hand or fist and Do means the art or way.
Tae Kwon Do was started by retired Korean army General Cho Hong Li. The beggining of Tae Kwon Do goes back thousands of years and was originally used for unarmed combat and self defense.
Today people of all ages like me practice Tae Kwon Do to become physically strong and be active and to have self control. My teacher is Mr. Morningstar and he is a certified 5th degree black belt, he teaches me the Tae Kwon Do moves and philosophy.
I have earned my yellow stripe so far and some moves I have learned are, Saju Jirugi, which is a four-direction punch, and Saju Makgi, which is a four-direction block.
I've learned three step sparring, self-defense and kicking.
To earn my first belt I also had to know the student oath and tenants, which are very important in Tae Kwon Do, the oath is:
I shall observe the tenants of Tae K won Do.
I shall respect the instructor and seniors.
I shall never misuse Tae Kwon Do.
I shall be a champion of freedom and justice.
I shall build a more peaceful world.
The tenants of Tae Kwon Do are:
Courtesy
Integrity
Perseverance
Self-control
Indomitable spirit
I hope you enjoyed learning about Tae Kwon Do and maybe someday you will earn your black belt.
