Here comes the guy with the purple, orange and white Jersey dribbling down the court, he shoots, he scores. The crowd goes wild HAAA!! Oh, Hello Judges,Teachers and Students. Today I will be talking to you about the one and only Steve Nash. One of the best point guards in the NBA today.
Steve John Nash was born in Johannesburg, South Africa on February 7th,1974. They moved to Canada when he was 1 year old. When he was young he played soccer and many other sports too. Steve’s first word was “GOAL”.
He wanted to be really good at one sport. He liked basketball the best. He spent his Senior year at St Michael’s University High School. He became the star point guard and led his team to the British Columbia Championships. His coach Ian Hyde-Lay knew that Steve was good enough for an American School. Ian Hyde-Lay phoned every college but none of them wanted Steve. One day Dick Davey from Santa Clara University in Northern California came to watch Steve play. Coach Davey was impressed with Steve’s speed and skill and offered him a Scholarship. Santa Clara University weren’t as big, strong and tough as the other Basketball teams. Steve and his teammates had to win by out hustling and out thinking their opponents. During his first year at Santa Clara University he inspired everyone by making it to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. Santa Clara University beat the Arizona wildcats. Steve was so happy because he got 6 shots in 31 seconds.
During his College years he thought of going to the pros. He got picked by the Phoenix Suns. He didn’t like it in the beginning because he was always on the bench.
He played one game in his first season. His second year was nearly the same but he displayed a good shot. Other teams noticed his skill. In 1998-1999 he got traded to the
Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks hadn’t won in nearly 10 years. The Mavericks hoped Steve could make them go to the playoffs. They signed Steve to a 33 Million dollar contract! Steve got a bad foot injury but it got better just in time for the 2000 Olympics. He played for Team Canada. They beat the Yugoslavia, Russia, Australia and Spain teams. Canada lost to France because they triple-teamed Steve. After the Olympics he had a new attitude and became more confident. Steve started to score about 16 points or more a game. The Mavericks were a fun team to watch.
After the 2003-2004 season, Steve became a free agent which means he could go to any team he wanted to. The Suns asked Steve to sign a 60 Million Dollar contract and he did. He said “I do not want to leave the Mavericks but joining the Suns was the best for me”. The Suns were a bad team. Steve made things all better. The Suns got 62 wins. During the 2004-2005 playoffs Steve was announced MVP. In the 2005-2006 playoffs he won most valuable player again. Steve still plays on the Phoenix Suns team but hopefully he will play for the Toronto Raptors someday.
Steve Nash is the best Canadian point guard in the NBA. Steve made his dream come true by never giving up in a sport that he loved. He is a true athlete, a determined athlete and a leader to all players who had a chance to play with him. So, remember to never give up on your dreams. I hope you enjoyed my Speech on Steve Nash and thank you for your attention.
