Science - Boon or Bane

Written in: Grade 5 | Year: 2009

Have you ever wondered a time when we all live like the Jetsons? I have. But, I have also wondered what if we were like the Flitstones, living in a world with no science and technology perhaps even before the discovery of wheels. That would've been really tough. Then, there would be no cars, bikes, or any automobiles. We would also have no school and we would've never been able to live in our houses like how we do today. We have all become so dependent that a life without science and technology would seem more like a nightmare.

Science has so much engulfed our lives that nothing can take place in our day to day work without the help of science. Our food, transport, learning, administration, recreation and social life are all linked with science in various ways. The aim of science is to search for truth, and to know things that lay, unrevealed. Great discoveries are a result of reasoning. A lot of patience and observation are also required.

The invention of the simple wheel has resulted in our modern industrialization. Electricity, as a source of energy, has revolutionized the world. Radios, TVs and cinemas which entertain us are all the products of science. So, a common man has to conclude that science is a boon to mankind.

Like every coin has two sides, it was science that gave birth to destructive weapons like dynamite, guns, rifles, rockets, atom bombs and hydrogen bombs. It was science that gave electric power and nuclear power. If nuclear power was used for peaceful purposes, there is no need to fear. But after all it is human to err. Can anyone say that there is no chance of the destruction of a Hiroshima or a Nagaski being repeated? If that happens, will not science be a bane to humanity? Leaving that part, another creation of science is pollution of the environment.

Industrialization with the aid of science has polluted air, water, food and the atmosphere. The ozone layer is giving threatening signals. So, here is a case for us to consider science as a cause of ruin. Humans have always been able to conquer and take control of all other creatures in the world. So, let us believe that our wisdom will prevail and that we can reason out for the well-being of our planet. When the universe reveals more secrets to man by means of science, there is hope that the present man will soon become a superman and eventually science would only be a boon and not a bane of his life.

Science without conscience is death of the soul.
