I am having the worst day; things could not be worse. Oh my gosh. How could this happen to me? Ugggggggghhhhhhh. This is the worst day ever: I’m in the worst mood ever.
Good morning Mr. Hundt, Mrs. Kato and fellow students. Today, I’m going to be talking to you about moods. They’re something that affects everyone everyday, but we really don’t think about them that much. So I’m going to shed a little light on the fascinating topic.
Mood by definition is a state of mind or emotion; the way you think or the way you feel. Just by hearing this definition, you know that moods have a huge affect on everyone and can be affected very easily.
Of course the people around you especially have an affect on you because they can either give or take your mood. For instance if you’re in a good mood, but your friend is in a bad mood, chances are your happiness will be replaced with a bitter, sour horrific mood. This goes vice versa as well. This actually happened to me once; my friend Emily was in a horrible mood, but I was in a great mood. She was very ill tempered that day, but I had just gotten an A. After spending a recess with her; well boy was I in a bad mood. And also when interacting with other people, you have to make sure that your mood doesn’t make you do something you’ll regret, like making a promise you won’t keep or upsetting someone. Yes, moods are contagious, whether you want them or not they’ll come and change your day. So always try and put a smile on someone’s face and pass on a good mood. This aspect of moods can be both good and bad, but if a person always has a negative outlook on life, most probably no one will want to be around him or her. So think about that next time you’re feeling moody!
As much as people are related to your mood, it’s not only about how your mood affects others; external factors have a big role in your mood as well. Your environment is something on the outside that can strongly affect your mood. For example if you’re in an environment that’s very upbeat and cheerful, you mood will be the same. I remember this one party I went to. There were decorations everywhere and everyone was smiling and having a great time. It put me in such a great mood. That was one of the best parties ever. Unfortunately the opposite of this is also true.
Another thing that affects your mood is colours. When in a room that is painted a certain colour or when you see some thing of a certain colour, your mood can easily be changed. For instance blue can make you feel peaceful, clean, secure or calm where as red gives you the feeling of desire, strength or love. Green can make you feel jealous, lucky or youthful and purple can make you feel mysterious, wise or royal. And perhaps this is why you need to really think about the colour you paint a room!
The last big external factor that I’m going to talk about is food. It’s surprising, but certain nutrients just have the ability to put you in a better mood. They influence your brain chemistry and nerves. Strawberries, blueberries and ginger are only a few of the many mood enhancing foods. But by eating poorly, overeating or following very restrictive diets you will experience mood swings and mood changes; and usually not good ones!
But never fear, you can do certain things to change this. Some examples of things you can do to improve your mood are to do yoga, creative thinking, exercise, or reading; anything to calm yourself down or to release the negative energy, but if you don’t have time to do this, find the cause of your anger and get rid of it. Unless of course it’s a person! It seems simple, you just have to try and do this before you pass on the irritating mood.
Yes, moods are definitely a huge part of life, but you can’t let them take over and cause you to do things you’ll regret. So if you eat right, hang around positive people and live in a good environment your mood is a lot less likely to be bad. And, also remember, moods are contagious, so try to make sure yours is worth catching.
