Lucy was born on November 30, 1874 in Clifton on Prince Edward Island. Clara Mcneill, Lucy’s mother, died from a lung disease when Lucy was only 12 months old. John, Lucy’s dad moved to western Canada in Saskatchewan, Prince Albert looking for a better life but didn’t bring Lucy along. Lucy was taken cared by her grandparents Lucy Woolner and Alexander Mcneill.

Nature was Lucy’s friend since no children lived close by. When Lucy was 10 years old, she wrote a story called “Anne of Islands”. Four years later, she moved to western Canada to live with her dad and her new stepmother. Poem was Lucy’s favourite activity. Lucy sent some to companies but got rejected. In November 26, 1890 Lucy wrote another poem called “Cape Leforce” which was published in the Daily Pariot.

She left western Canada and went to school. Her teacher loved Lucy’s stories and asked for her hand of marriage. Lucy said “No.” He moved to Toronto to become a minister. The days pass and Lucy graduated. She took a teaching course in Prince of Wales College. She got secretly engaged with Edwin Simpson her cousin. They broke the engagement after 1 year.

On January 16, 1900, it was a hard time for Lucy since her dad died. After one year, she worked at the Daily Echo in Halifax. At the age of 24, Lucy wrote a story called “Anne of Green Gables”. When she was almost done writing the book, an interruption came. It was Ewan McDonald. “Anne of Green Gables” got published in 1908, and one of the first English book translated into Japanese.

Pretty soon Ewan and Lucy got engaged but did not have time to arrange a wedding because of her grandmother. Eventually her grandmother died on March 5, 1911. Now Lucy was free to marry Ewan McDonald. They moved to Leaksdale, Ontario and had 3 kids but one of them died at birth.

When Lucy’s book “Anne of green Gables” turned into a movie in 1919, but she was disappointed since the actress was nothing like Anne.

In 1923, Lucy was honored the Royal Society of Arts in England. Lucy was the first Canadian woman Member.
