Ancient Rome

Written in: Grade 5 | Year: 2010

Imagine yourself in the shoes of a gladiator. Fighting for your life, on which adrenalin was fuelling you. What if you lived in a city that would be one of the most well known places in the world before Christ stood on this earth? Structures and building so advanced before their time. Salve! Ancient Rome was this place.

Ancient Rome was located on the seven hills of the Italian Peninsula. Before Italy was estabilished, it was the Roman Empire. But now Rome is the capitol of Italy. Its location helped Ancient Rome to become bigger because of the easy access to the Tiber River. Ancient legend has it that the god of mars had twins named Romolus and Remus. Romolus and Remus were abandoned on the banks of the Tiber River. You'd think a wolf would come by and eat them. But instead a female wolf came by and actually nursed them like a mother would. Later on, a very kind Shepard took the two boys home to his wife and brought up the twins as their sons. When the two boys grew up, they thought it was a good idea it build a city on the place they were found. All of a sudden a war broke out and Romolus killed Remus. A legend has it that Romolus was selfish and wanted it all for himself and named it Rome. But back main picture. In Ancient Rome the many people's social life had many similarities like ours.

In Ancient Rome, they had gardens so they wouldn't have to buy fruits or vegetables but could also sell some of their fruits of labour to the wealthier people. If they didn't have a stove, then they would have to buy bread from the bakery. People who did have a stove could bread and baked goods. Takeout food was very common. You could find this throughout the city. The men worked and the women stayed home to take care of the young ones and the home. Back then men and women had equal rights just like today. Today the men or women could either have of choice of working or staying at home.

Romans were no specific race. Any time they conquered a new area the people automatically became Roman citizens. It helped to build a larger army and population which made them an even stronger force. Their politics and religion were mostly the same. All Romans believed in the all the Gods. Some of these gods where Venus, Gauis Julius Cesar, Apollo, Bacchus, Ceres, Cupid, Diana, Fortana, Janus, Juno, Jupiter, Maia, Mars, Mercury, Minerva, Neptune, Pluto, Proserpina, Saturn, Uranus, Vesta, and Vulcan.

Today there are many similarities of things we have borrowed from the Romans. They include: the building of roads, buildings, bridges, and cities. Their great works of art are displayed in our museums and art galleries. They give us ideas how to govern and maintain order. With a legal system. Military leaders of today still study Julius Cesar's army and Roman military organizations. The Romans left their Latin language which has made the English language richer.
